Diffusion
Diffusion fabrics are used to soften and diffuse lights for film, television and photo shoots. The amount of light diffused depends on the type of fabric chosen. Chiffon and Voile will bring the light down 1/4 stop. China silk will bring light down 1/2 stop. Poly silk provides the greatest amount of diffusion by bringing the light down 1 full stop. When diffusion fabrics are used with colored lights, they can impart a soft glow to an otherwise harsh looking shot.
For constructing large diffusion panels, Sail Cloth, a lightweight fabric that is reinforced with nylon threads and coated with polyurethane, is durable and light. Sail cloth comes in a regular and a “silent” version, which is much quieter when windblown or shaken.
Cinenet (a.k.a. Bobbinette) is lightweight, and knit with an octagonal weave, which can be layered to increase the amount of light diffused.
