Light plays an essential role in theater, photography and film. Part of setting up the perfect lighting is controlling shadow, which is where Duvetyne comes in.
Duvetyne is a common blackout fabric due to its opacity. It’s made of 100% cotton and comes in several weights and widths such as - 8 oz. and 12 oz.This material lets very little light through, making it ideal for eliminating reflections and hiding light sources. Additionally, Duvetyne curtains offer the following benefits:
This fabric is also relatively inexpensive, allowing you to purchase a full Duvetyne roll if you so choose. As a resilient and affordable material, Duvetyne is excellent for solving common production issues, such as hiding set pieces.
Commando Cloth is a specific type of Duvetyne fabric. It's thicker and heavier than standard Duvetyne fabric, giving it stronger blackout qualities. If you want less light showing through, Commando Cloth is 98% opaque. It’s often found masking unwanted light or covering an object. It is also used for inexpensive masking curtains and to put a hard edge on light or to create "dots and fingers." Because it is economical, it is often used by filmmakers to cover large objects, such as a tree or even a building, and is most commonly used for window blackouts.
Though Commando Cloth is by no means bulky, it is heavier than Duvetyne. It’s al;so more durable, so it's a good choice if your equipment sees rough use. Along with black, it’s available in varying colors, widths and weights for a variety of uses. No gaffer truck in Hollywood is ever without a roll of Duvetyne or Commando Cloth.
If you need a Duvetyne fabric roll for your theatrical production, you can likely find it at Rose Brand. We offer top-quality materials and custom services to production companies across North America. Browse our online inventory or contact us today to discuss your options.
