What to Consider When Choosing Velour Stage Curtains

Selecting the right velour fabric for stage curtains is crucial for aesthetic appeal, functionality, and safety. In this guide, we will explore essential factors such as material composition, weight, and flame-retardant certifications that impact performance and durability.

Material Composition

Look for high-quality Polyester or cotton fabrics that offer durability and a luxurious appearance. Polyester velour curtains are easier to maintain because the fabric's fibers are inherently flame-resistant, so they won't wash away in humid or wet conditions. Our ReVive velour is an example of a fabric that is both inherently flame-resistant (IFR) and eco-friendly. However, some prefer the classic look and feel of our cotton fabrics, which also meet rigorous flame-resistance standards. Cotton velours are made flame-retardant by applying a sprayed solution.

Weight of the Fabric

Fabric weight is critical when selecting velour for stage curtains, as it directly affects drape, durability, and sound absorption. Our velour range is available in 8 oz. to 32 oz., and you should select based on your draping, masking, and acoustics needs. Lighter weights (16–20 oz.) work well for legs, borders, and smaller spaces. Mid-range weights (22–25 oz.) are common for main velour stage curtains and masking. Heavyweight velour (26 oz. or higher) is used when maximum light absorption and sound control are needed. Fabrics with a deeper pile tend to block more light, absorb more sound, and create a softer, more luxurious look. Additionally, weight affects how well a curtain withstands the wear and tear of performances. A suitable weight ensures that the curtain hangs properly without sagging or losing its shape over time. 

Flame Retardant Certification

Ensure the velour fabric is certified as flame-retardant (IFR or FR) to meet the specific safety and insurance requirements for use in public spaces in your locale. IFR fabrics are inherently flame-retardant, while FR fabrics have been treated with a solution to make them flame-retardant. This certification indicates that the velour material has been tested and proven to resist ignition and limit fire spread, significantly enhancing safety in performance environments. Our velour materials are tested to meet various flame resistance standards. 

Opacity Level
