Discover Which Light Diffusion Fabric Fits Your Needs

Diffusion fabrics and film silks vary in the amount of light diffused. Voile will bring the light down 1/4 stop. China Silk will bring light down 1/2 stop. Poly silk provides the greatest amount of diffusion by bringing the light down 1 full stop. When diffusion fabrics are used with colored lights, they can impart a soft glow to an otherwise harsh-looking shot. See the chart below for how our diffusion fabrics are classified.

Sail cloth is a lightweight fabric that is reinforced with nylon threads and coated with polyurethane. Its durability and light weight make it great for large diffusion panels. Sail cloth comes in a regular and a “silent” version, which is much quieter when windblown or shaken.

Cinenet (a.k.a. bobbinette) is lightweight and knit with an octagonal opening, which can be layered to increase the amount of light diffused.

Which colors are most commonly used with diffusion fabrics?

When it comes to light diffusion, the most common colors of fabrics are black or white. Each color offers a different style of diffusion or bounce. We also carry lavender fabric, but it isn’t as commonly used as white or black.
