When should you use duvetyn fabric?

Duvetyn (often spelled duvetyne) is a common fabric used for masking. It’s made of 100% cotton. Our 8 oz duvetyn comes in several widths, including 54 inches and 118 inches. It's excellent at hiding large objects and eliminating reflections. Duvetyn fabrics and curtains offer the following benefits:

Lightweight.
Matte finish and velvety texture for optimal light absorption.
Fire retardant to comply with theater safety requirements.
Relatively inexpensive.

When should you use commando cloth?

Commando cloth is a specific type of duvetyne fabric. This fire-retardant fabric is thicker and heavier than standard duvetyn, giving it stronger blackout qualities. If you want less light showing through, 12 oz. commando cloth is 70% opaque, and 16 oz. is 98% opaque. It’s often used to mask unwanted light or to cover objects. It’s also used to put a hard edge on light or to create "dots and fingers." Because it’s economical compared to other black, opaque fabrics, filmmakers often use it to cover large objects, such as trees or buildings, and to blackout windows.

Though commando cloth is by no means bulky, it is heavier than duvetyn. It’s also more durable, so it's a good choice if your equipment sees rough use. In addition to black, it’s available in several colors, as well as a variety of widths and weights. No gaffer truck in Hollywood is ever without a roll of duvetyn or commando cloth.
