Masking That Accomodates Variable Projection Screen Sizes
Our client wanted an automated, motorized system for configuring all four sides of the masking curtains that surrounded their screen. The projection screen’s aspect ratio needed to accommodate 6 different configurations (4:3, 16:9…). Control of the pre-programmed positions of the masking curtains needed to be driven from the intelligent lighting system that had already been installed in the room.
Space was as tight as could be to accommodate the masking system’s curtains, motors and track, as well as audio components and shelving. Everything needed to fit, out of sight, behind the projection screen. We provided a complete turnkey solution including shop drawings, engineering, masking curtains, main curtain, custom metalworking, track, motors, rigging, shelving, logistics, and installation. We also custom configured a Rose Brand Stretcher Frame to support the projection screens and prevent bowing.
There was just a 3 foot area behind the screen to accommodate all of the equipment described above and just 1/4“ clearance around the system once completed. We also engaged entertainment engineers since the speaker shelves needed vibration dampening to prevent damage to any of the parts of the system, due to all of the components packed into such a confined space. Interestingly, Columbia used a perforated projection screen and acoustically transparent side panels so that sound could travel from the speakers behind the screen to the audience.
